Recognition

In the afternoon we said goodbye to Calvin and his two sons. They walked off as we were getting into the car. Watching them walk away I felt sad. I pulled myself together because there is no need to be sad at goodbyes; and besides who am I to assume they are unhappy. We had all had a great day. Everybody had enjoyed themselves. As I write, it occurs to me that the situation of Calvin and his boys is very similar to mine when I was a child. Weekends with dad and a childhood littered with goodbyes. Perhaps that is what made me momentarily tearful. As it turned out, I was able to smile as the three of them disappeared out of sight. Everything was okay and as it should be.
